“Limping-Limpopo
Anthony Turton, a Professor at the University of Free State Centre for Environmental Management, has noted that the Limpopo River basin has the highest water crowding in the country.
“Water crowding” is a global benchmark of sustainability and can be thought of as the number of people per standard unit of water (1m cubic metres).
A water crowding above 2 000 is associated with social instability and is known as “the water barrier” beyond which survival is possible only with massive injections of technology; and a value between 1 000 and 2 000 is considered to be water stressed. In fact a value of 1 000 is accepted as the reasonable upper limit that a given water supply can sustain over time and still retain its resilience to environmental shocks like drought.
No evidence exists of countries continuing to function as cohesive social and economic entities above the value of 2 000 (with the only known exception being Israel a technologically advanced society).
The water crowding for the Limpopo Basin was 4 219 in 2000 and is projected to be a staggering 4 974 in 2025. This will be more that 2.5 times higher than the globally accepted limit of social stability.
According to Turton, this suggests that the Limpopo will be the first region of South Africa to transition into social instability driven by endemic water scarcity, and thus a region to be watched with considerable interest by corporations, government, academia and ordinary citizens alike.”
